The short, honest answer is yes, a little. Every VPN adds two kinds of overhead. First, encryption — your device and the server spend a tiny bit of CPU time to encrypt and decrypt each packet. Second, the detour through a server — your traffic doesn’t go straight to the website; it goes to the VPN server first and only then to its destination. That detour adds a bit of latency.
But here’s the important nuance: on modern, fast protocols the difference is usually small. On WireGuard the speed loss is often measured in single-digit percentages, not in halves. And sometimes a VPN actually speeds your internet up — if your ISP artificially throttles certain traffic (video, torrents, gaming), a VPN hides the type of traffic, so the throttling stops kicking in.

What Affects VPN Speed
Four main factors shape your final speed.
1. Distance to the server
This is usually factor number one. The farther away the VPN server is physically, the higher the latency (ping) and the more it can cap your throughput. Connecting from London to a server in Amsterdam gives you an excellent result; connecting to a server in São Paulo will be noticeably worse. Light and signal don’t travel instantly: every thousand kilometers adds milliseconds, and a long route also means extra hops along the way.
2. The protocol

3. Server load
A single server is shared among many users. If the server is overloaded, everyone’s speed drops — it’s like a line at the store: the more people at one checkout, the slower the line moves. Quality providers spread the load across a pool of servers, so congestion is rare. With free, overcrowded VPNs, this is actually the main reason for slowdowns.
4. Your own connection
A VPN can’t make your internet faster than your physical plan. If you have 50 Mbps, you’ll get at most around that through a VPN — minus the small overhead. If your internet is slow without a VPN too (weak Wi-Fi, an old router, evening rush hour at your ISP), the VPN isn’t to blame. So before blaming the VPN, check your speed without it.
A note on latency vs. download speed
Speed isn’t one number. It helps to separate two things. Bandwidth (Mbps) determines how fast files download and video loads. Latency (ping, ms) determines responsiveness — how quickly the server “answers.” A VPN affects latency more: every extra kilometer to the server and the encryption step itself add milliseconds. For streaming and downloads a small latency increase is barely noticeable, but for online gaming and video calls it’s critical. That’s why the very same VPN server can feel fine while watching a show yet noticeably get in the way in a shooter — the issue isn’t download speed, it’s ping.

People often wonder “why is my VPN slow,” when the problem isn’t the VPN itself but the settings:
- A distant server is selected. Connecting to another continent “just to try” is the most common cause.
- A heavy protocol. If the app uses OpenVPN over TCP where WireGuard would pass, speed is noticeably lower.
- An overloaded free server. Thousands of people on one pipe, and speed drops for everyone.
- Wi-Fi interference. Half of the “VPN’s fault” is actually a weak Wi-Fi signal.
How to Speed Up Your VPN
The good news: you can influence your speed. Here’s what actually helps.
Pick a nearby server
This is the single most effective tip. There’s no need to connect to a server on the other side of the world if you just want privacy or to bypass a block. Choose a server in your own country or a neighboring one — lower ping, higher speed. Switch locations only when you genuinely need a specific region.
Use WireGuard
If your app lets you choose a protocol, start with WireGuard. It’s the fastest of the mainstream protocols and the best default for most networks. Move to OpenVPN or VLESS+Reality only if WireGuard can’t get through your network’s filtering.
Connect over a cable
A wired (Ethernet) connection is more stable and usually faster than Wi-Fi, especially if the router is far away or there are many competing networks around. If you’re measuring speed and see strange dips, try a cable — often the problem is the wireless link, not the VPN.
Change the protocol or port
Sometimes an ISP or network throttles VPN traffic specifically on standard ports. Switching the protocol (for example, to VLESS+Reality, which disguises itself as ordinary HTTPS) or the port helps work around such slowdowns. If speed is low on one protocol, try another — the difference can be significant.
Restart and reconnect
It’s basic, but it works: reconnecting to the VPN can move you to a less loaded server or reset a stuck connection. Restarting your router also sometimes fixes issues that get wrongly blamed on the VPN.
Check MTU and background apps
Sometimes it’s not the VPN itself cutting your speed but small things around it. An MTU (packet size) that’s too large causes fragmentation and a performance hit — a good app tunes this automatically, but it’s worth checking if you configure things by hand. And more obviously: background downloads, system updates, cloud sync, and open torrents all share your pipe. If you’re measuring speed, close everything unnecessary first, otherwise the result will read low — and not because of the VPN.
How to Measure the Difference
Don’t guess — measure. An objective check takes a couple of minutes.

- Turn the VPN on and measure again. Connect to a nearby server and rerun the test on the same speed test page.
- Compare. A difference of a few percent is normal. If speed dropped by half or more, the cause is usually a distant server, a heavy protocol, or an overloaded free node.

Measure several times and at different times of day: a single reading can land on a random load spike and mislead you.
