Why distance matters

The physically farther a site's server is, the higher the latency (ping) and the slower pages load. We locate the site's server and your location and compute the great-circle distance. Note: CDNs may serve content from a closer edge.

Why doesn't distance always match ping?

Ping depends on the route and link quality, not just straight-line distance. Plus CDNs may serve from a nearby edge rather than the main datacenter.

What is the distance based on?

The geolocation of the site server's IP and your IP. For a domain we first resolve its IP, then take the coordinates of both ends.
