Why you need a VPN on public Wi-Fi
Free Wi-Fi in a cafe, airport or hotel is convenient — but risky. An open network is built so that outsiders can see your data, and you can’t tell a dangerous hotspot just by looking at it. Let’s go through what can go wrong and how a VPN closes it.
Why public Wi-Fi is dangerous
- Traffic interception. On an open, unencrypted network, fellow Wi-Fi users with enough skill can capture unprotected data.
- Fake hotspots. An attacker sets up a network named something like “Free_Airport_WiFi,” you connect — and all your traffic runs through their device.
- Page tampering. Through a network they control, they can serve fake login pages and steal passwords.
- Network-owner tracking. Even a legitimate hotspot sees which sites you open and can log it.
Modern sites use HTTPS, which helps but doesn’t cover everything: DNS requests and site addresses are still visible, and old or sloppy apps may send data without proper protection.
How a VPN helps
A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel from your device to a server. On a public network that changes everything:
- Encryption. Even if someone intercepts your traffic, they only see an encrypted stream, not your data.
- Protection from fake hotspots. Connect to a malicious network and, through the VPN, you’re still inside an encrypted tunnel — there’s nothing to intercept.
- Hiding your sites. Neither the Wi-Fi owner nor a neighbor can see which resources you open.

Simple rules on a public network
- Turn the VPN on before you open email or banking.
- Don’t switch it off “for a second” — that’s exactly when data slips out.
- Use a kill switch: if the tunnel drops, your connection won’t fall back to the open network.
- Be suspicious of password-free networks and pages that suddenly ask you to log in.
