Static vs dynamic IP — the difference and which to choose
Every device on the internet has an IP address — a numeric label that data uses to find its way to it. Think of it as a postal address: without one, a letter (or in our case a web page, a video, or a message) wouldn’t know where to come back to. When you open a website, your request leaves from your IP, and the reply comes straight back to it.
IPs come in two flavours by how they behave over time: a dynamic IP, which changes every now and then, and a static IP, which stays assigned to you permanently. Most home users never think about which one they have, and that’s fine — for everyday browsing the difference is barely noticeable. But the moment you want to run your own server, access a machine remotely, or check security cameras, the choice between a static and a dynamic IP suddenly matters a great deal.

Dynamic IP
A dynamic IP is an address your provider hands you temporarily and changes from time to time. Here’s how it works: when your router connects to the provider’s network, a special server (DHCP) assigns it a free address from a shared pool. After a while — on reconnection, a router reboot, or simply on a schedule — that address can switch to a different one.
A dynamic IP is exactly what the vast majority of home subscribers get by default. It’s more convenient for the provider: there aren’t enough IPv4 addresses in the world for everyone, so they’re rotated among customers. While you’re offline, your former address gets handed to someone else.
Pros of a dynamic IP:
- It’s free. It comes bundled with a normal plan, no extra charge.
- Slightly more privacy. Since the address changes, it’s harder to tie a long activity history to it than to a fixed one.
- Fewer targeted attacks. It’s harder for an attacker to “lock on” to an address that will be different tomorrow.
Cons of a dynamic IP:
- You can’t reliably be reached from outside. If you want to connect to your home computer or camera from anywhere in the world, a shifting address keeps breaking your setup.
- Hosting headaches. Running a server at home that people reach by address is tricky — the address keeps moving.
- You need workarounds. To get around the changes, people use dynamic DNS (DDNS) services that bind a fixed name to a changing IP.
For browsing, messaging, streaming, and gaming, a dynamic IP is completely sufficient. It suits most people perfectly, and there’s no point paying extra for a static one.
Static IP
A static IP is a permanent address that’s assigned to you and doesn’t change — not on reboot, not over time. You’re always found at the same “number,” and anyone who knows that address will always reach your device.
A static IP address is usually offered as a paid service by your provider and is needed in specific scenarios:
- Your own server or website. A web server, mail server, or game server is easier to run on a fixed address, so it can always be reached via a domain name.
- Remote access. Connecting to a work or home computer over RDP, SSH, or VNC — when the address is stable, you configure it once and it just works.
- Surveillance cameras. To watch an IP camera’s feed from anywhere, it helps to have an unchanging address at home.
- Corporate services and VPN servers. Businesses often grant access by IP allowlists — for that, the address has to be permanent.
Pros of a static IP:
- Stability. The address is always the same — no surprises, no reconnection breakage.
- Remote access works out of the box. Set it up once, use it for years.
- Good for hosting and allowlisting. You can point a domain straight at it and add it to trusted lists.
Cons of a static IP:
- It costs money. Providers charge a separate fee for a static address.
- Less privacy. A fixed address is easier to tie to you and to track over a long history.
- Higher security demands. Since you’re always “visible” at one address, you become a standing target for scanners and attacks. Any services you expose on a static IP need careful protection: a firewall, strong passwords, updates. Otherwise a permanent address turns into a permanent hole.

How to find out which IP you have
The simplest method is to check your current external address with our find your IP tool, write it down, then check again a day or two later (especially after a router reboot). If the address has changed, you have a dynamic IP. If it stayed the same, it’s probably static — though only your provider can confirm that with 100% certainty.

Internal vs external IP, IPv4 vs IPv6
It’s important not to mix up the two different IPs you have at the same time.
Your external (public) IP is the address the whole internet sees. There’s one for your entire home or office: your provider hands it to your router. This is the one websites and our tools display.
Your internal (local) IP is a device’s address inside your home network, usually something like 192.168.0.x. Your router assigns it, and it’s invisible from outside. A laptop, phone, and TV on the same network will have different internal IPs but share one external IP.
The static-vs-dynamic split applies at both levels, but when someone says “I have a static IP,” they usually mean the external address from their provider.
Another distinction is the protocol version. IPv4 is the classic kind of address like 93.184.216.34; there are only about 4.3 billion of them, and they ran out long ago — which is exactly why addresses get handed out dynamically. IPv6 is the newer format with an enormous supply of addresses (like 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334) that will last a very long time. Many providers already issue IPv6, and it’s often more “permanent” than IPv4 — though in everyday use this rarely matters yet.
Where a VPN fits in
