Turn on the hotspot
- Open your phone’s Settings.
- Go to Connections (or Network & internet) → Hotspot & tethering (or Mobile Hotspot and Tethering).
- Find Mobile Hotspot (Wi-Fi hotspot) and toggle it on.
- The phone creates a wireless network. Its name and password are shown right there.

How to share internet from an iPhone (Personal Hotspot)
On iPhone the feature is called Personal Hotspot. It works similarly, with a couple of quirks.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Personal Hotspot (if it isn’t on the main Settings screen, it’s inside Cellular → Personal Hotspot).
- Turn on the Allow Others to Join toggle.
- Right there, in the Wi-Fi Password field, you can set your own connection password. Apple requires at least 8 characters — which is the right call.
The iPhone’s network name matches the device name (for example, “Andrew’s iPhone”). You can change it in Settings → General → About → Name.
A perk of the Apple ecosystem: if your laptop is a Mac and both devices are signed into the same Apple ID, the hotspot turns on even more easily via Instant Hotspot. Bluetooth tethering
Internet is shared over Bluetooth — the most economical channel, but also the slowest.
- Pros: minimal battery drain, fine when you don’t need speed, just light access to email or a messenger.
- Cons: low speed (Bluetooth isn’t built for heavy traffic), trickier to set up (you first have to pair the devices).

Common problems and fixes
The device won’t connect to the hotspot
- Check that the hotspot is actually on and hasn’t shut off after an idle timeout.
- Make sure you’re entering the correct password — it’s case-sensitive.
- On the laptop, forget the network and reconnect, entering the password again.
- Try switching the band to 2.4 GHz: older laptops and devices can’t see 5 GHz networks.
